Gerber Good Start SoothePro powdered infant formula lots were voluntarily recalled last March after possible contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria was identified, yet some lots continued being distributed even after receiving notice, according to FDA data.
Perrigo Company, Gerber’s parent company, noted in their initial recall notice that it had been issued “out of an abundance of caution”, due to an identified bacteria source at their Eau Claire facility despite no reports of illnesses being linked with its distribution or presence in distributed formula.
Perrigo Company reported on March 17th that after receiving notice of this recall notice, one wholesaler provided 12.4-ounce infant formula packages to supermarket stores in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio Tennessee Virginia West Virginia as soon as it could. Families that may have purchased these bottles at home should inspect any impacted containers immediately to see if any were included in this recall notice.
Cronobacter sakazakii can be found widespread within our environment; however, infection with it is generally rare, yet can result in serious illness for premature infants, babies younger than 2 months, those with compromised immune systems, and those who take certain medicines that weaken immunity. If left unchecked, serious infection could spread into blood and cause meningitis or sepsis that is life threatening – potentially even leading to permanent disability and even death.

Are You Worried Your Infant Has Consumed Recalled Product? To discuss if their infant may have consumed any recalled product, reach out to their pediatrician and receive more information on signs that your baby might have contracted Cronobacter Infection? These symptoms could include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths or abnormal movements as reported by The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
Cronobacter played a prominent role in the 2022 infant formula shortage, when an Abbott Nutrition plant in Sturgis, Michigan was forced to close due to Cronobacter infections being discovered among several infants who consumed formula made there. Recall and facility closure, coupled with pandemic supply chain issues caused a nationwide formula shortage which had families everywhere scrambling for formula food their babies. Given the smaller scale of Gerber Good Start infant formula recall it’s unlikely this time around will cause shortages;
